Program Description Sheridan’s Personal Support Worker program prepares you to provide assistance to the elderly and individuals with disabilities across the lifespan. What you'll gain In just one year, you can develop the skills you need to begin a satisfying career helping in a long-term care facility, supportive housing, home care, adult daycare and palliative care. Things you'll learn to do Assist clients with activities of daily living, including meal prep, feeding and personal care. Understand and empathize with clients and their challenging situations. Lift and transfer clients. Increase your clients' comfort, safety and mobility. Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients and report accurately. Hands-on experience Your training will include 350 hours (four full weeks) in two practicum settings, including a long-term care facility and your choice of community setting. Sheridan arranges your placements for you, and a faculty member supervises your Long Term Care placement. Field experiences often lead directly to employment after graduation. Additional information In addition to quickly preparing you to enter a growing field, your Personal Support Worker training is also a path toward starting a nursing education, if this is your long-term goal. Two of your courses transfer as credit to the nursing program, including one that is a joint course completed with the nursing students. All professors teaching in the Personal Support Worker program hold a bachelor's or master's degree in nursing, and all are heavily engaged in the personal care field. They bring their own experience working in elder care to the classroom.
